Pathways to Chartership

The highest standard in the project profession.

Chartered status shows you have achieved the highest standard of expertise in the project profession — proven exceptional capability across technical knowledge, professional practice, and ethical behaviour.

It is a key criterion for those wishing to attain the UK Government's Senior or Master Practitioner accreditation, and increasingly used by global private-sector organisations as the benchmark for senior project leadership.

Who it's for

  • 01

Professionals with significant experience in complex projects, programmes, or portfolios

  • 02

Leaders of key project control functions such as PMOs

  • 03

Senior practitioners targeting UK Government Senior or Master Practitioner status

Four pathways. One common assessment.

The APM offers four pathways to Chartership depending on what Recognised Assessments you already hold. All pathways share the same core assessment — a written submission and an interview.

01
Pathway 1 — Experiential

For applicants without a Recognised Assessment. Demonstrate competence through experience and a full written submission.

02
Pathway 2 — PPQ holders

For those who hold the APM's Project Professional Qualification. A faster route, with PPQ acting as the Recognised Assessment.

03
Pathway 3 — Other Recognised Assessments

For those who hold one of the APM's published Recognised Assessments from another awarding body.

04
Pathway 4 — Organisational

Where an organisation's internal assessment scheme has been awarded Chartership Recognised Assessment status. Used by Shell, BAE Systems and PDO.

Open Q&A sessions where any candidate can bring a current challenge — drafting, evidence selection, or interview nerves.

Chartership inside your own project academy.

Many of our clients embed Chartership into a wider in-house academy — competence framework, evidence capture, and career pathway all aligned to the standard.

We can incorporate the Chartership competences into your academy, including the use of our Competence Evidence Management System (CEMS) to define, capture and manage competence evidence. With partners at Online Profiling, we have been trusted by Shell's global project academy for over a decade to support assessment and accreditation across 4,000+ project professionals.

We have also helped Shell, BAE Systems and PDO win Chartership Recognised Assessment status — providing a significantly shorter pathway to ChPP for their staff.

Where embedding pays off

  • 01

    Standardised evidence capture across cohorts

  • 02

    Pathway 4 organisational Recognised Assessment

  • 03

Shorter, lower-cost Chartership route per candidate

  • 04

Internal consistency of standard across departments
